All of our curtain linings are flame retardant to British Standards and can be used in contract environments.

Unlined Curtains

Unlined Curtains are a good option if you are looking for a low cost option. If the fabric is dimout or blackout it will provide you with a good amount of shading for the rooms with these curtains, dimout will be 90%+ and blackout with an off-white 3 pass coating will be 100% blackout. Obviously, depending on where the track is located, it will depend how much light will come through.

Unlined Curtains

Polyester Light Weight Lining - Thermal Reflect Heat in Summer

Standard polyester FR lining is a low-cost option that provides extra fullness and helps your curtains drape better. The Polyester lining can be washed 50 times and is inherently flame retardant. It will provide additional shade on standard fabrics and on dimout and blackout fabrics it adds a more luxurious feel. But remember that your washing needs to be in accordance with the face fabric and the lining.

Blackout Curtain Lining - Thermal - Keep Warm in Winter

Certified for thermal insulation. Certified by a laboratory to improve heat retention by 31% compared to not having a curtain. 3 Pass blackout lining is completely blackout and will not let any light through. This is our ideal choice for curtains as it ensures no light comes through. Certified to BS5867 Part 2B and washable up to 10 times. The 3 pass coating is durable and provides a thermal benefit while improving the curtain’s drape.

The Herringbone face fabric is 360gsm

Our curtain as far as we can see against our competitor's (February 2020-May 2024) product is the only product actually tested with a double glazed window. Our testing has been performed in February 2020 and was with a real-world set up and performed in a laboratory to record the results. The results show that the curtain reduces sound entering a space by 4 Decibels when combined with a brand new standard double glazed window.

When tested without the window in an open space it tested to 11 decibels. Obviously, when working with a window, the window is doing the majority of the acoustic reduction.

Curtain Track

Quite simply our product is laboratory proven and has the following features;

  • Proven to reduce sound passing between 2 spaces. It is certified depending on the number of layers up to 4db with a double glazzed window and 12db as a room divider for ENISO 1040-1
  • A decorative product, as well as a sound blocking product.
  • Hangs beautifully and works with standard curtain tracks and poles.
  • Room Divider means no other obstruction stopping sound passing between a space
  • If there is a door it will not work as well or a wall as the object is doing the work already

Curtain installed on a curtain track. 20cm Above the window and curtains to the floor, 30cm Passed each side and a window in a gap in a breeze block wall and mounted our curtain in front of it.

The window tested had a result fo 29db and combining the window with our 2 layer curtain gave a result of 33db reduction.

About the Face Fabric

Acoustic Fabric

The herringbone range of curtain fabrics are an acoustic range of curtains, this means that they are ideally suited to reduce the amount of echo and reverberation of sound around a space.

Using Different linings can give you some great sound blocking over 11db to 12db when used as a room divider.

  • The face fabric is certified to BS5867 Part2C. Lining is BS5867 Part 2B -
  • The fabric is ideal for flame retardant curtains and accessories. Our best selling flame retardant curtain fabric
  • Acoustic Rating of Face Fabric - has been tested to EN ISO 354 --- GRADE A 0.95 reduction in the acoustic lab. 
  • 100% Blackout When Lined.
  • EN ISO 717-1 for acoustic insulation to 5db and 11db when lined.

10 Decibels is half of the audible sound.

The herringbone range has passed a certified acoustic report. This means it is ideally suited for sound absorption as it is graded A for EN ISO 354:2003. It has passed the classification A standard so it will absorb sound at a variety of frequencies. A sound absorbtion of 0.95aw

Frequently Asked Question About Sound Proof Curtains

- This all depends on how your room is constructed and most importantly the windows that are in your room. If you have a draughty window made out of single glazing then our curtains will work well to reduce the sound entering and passing around the room. The curtains have been tested for sound insulation effectively sound blocking. The tests performed in the laboratory have shown the insulation 4db of insulation with a double glazed window. However, the sound blocking is totally dependent on the structure of the room and windows. We have picked a standard test of double glazing in a block structure room and we got the 4db result.

Road Noise is generally low tones when on the roadside, so if on a ground floor level the sound is probably entering through the fabric of the building. This means your adjustments will need to be more structural. For higher frequencies, these curtains will work well to dull the sound.

Similar to road noise it depends on the construction of your room

We have had customers note - they have seen upto a 50% improvement when using double glazing and our curtains. They can now sleep through the the early morning flights. Modern buildings with quality double glazing units will only see a marginal impact from the sound entering the room. Where you will notice the improvement is the sound already bounces around the space. As you are adding an acoustic absorber being the face fabric to the space, it will reduce the reverberation of the sound passing around the space.

It is important to ensure you use a metal heavy duty curtain track. As a standard our curtains weight approx 800gms. So for a standard pair of curtains 200cm x 200cm they would weigh 8kg. These are deemed quite heavy curtains. We recommend our optimal track or our roller runner track.

Read this carefully. There is no difference between the 2. We just like to explain the product for one use and another for a different use. The room divider curtain has been tested as a room divider so has a sound insulation of 11db varying on lining and the window curtain has been tested infront of a double glazed window so has a 4 db uplift above the double glazed window.

When working with loud echoes in spaces it can be incredibly frustrating to stop sound reverberating around the room. This is where an acoustic curtain come in. Depending on the fabric it will have a varying effect on the amount of absorption that It takes and effects the sound passing back around the room.

To see how good a fabric or product is at absorbing sound in a room then you need to complete the Sound absorption test EN ISO 354. This grades a product between A – E based on how absorbent a material is. When sound is projected into a room it will hit the surfaces and then it will either be transmitted through things like ceilings and walls or it will be reflected back into the room. So in a basic form, the test is how much sound is sent out will return.

Example Imagine. 100 units of sound are sent into a room, 95 units are transmitted out of the room and then 5 are recorded back into the space.

Thus the sound absorption coefficient is 0,95

Sound insulation is the measurement of sound passing between 2 spaces when comparing its performance in an aperature that is open and then sealed with the test product. This is tested with ENISO 717 for acousitc insulation. This is measured in decibells and is measured to show the reduction of sound.

We live near a busy airport and so have aircraft noise often during the night. We decided that sound reduction curtains would be a good idea. I "Firefoxed" sound reduction curtains and very fortunately for us Direct Fabrics was suggested. They have a YouTube channel which I would recommend you watch. We requested some sample fabrics (which are free) and they arrived within a couple of days. There is an excellent choice so you will have no problems finding one you like. We would like to thank Lizzie for being so patient with our questions and nothing was too much trouble for her. We placed the order 14/10 and the curtain track arrived within a week. The curtains were delivered 12/11. The quality is 10/10 and we are very pleased with the sound reduction. The aeroplanes are noticably quieter and the bedroom is pitch black! First of all I really enjoy reading Trustpilot reviews because simply put I trust them and people who bother writing them seem to want to help future consumers make better choices. With this in mind I want to say that all my dealings with Direct Fabrics have been absolutely brilliant. I had spent months, literally, seeing other companies about blinds and curtains and none of them were able to do what I needed and I kept changing my mind about what I really needed. I ended up deciding that I needed curtains that were both blackout and soundproofed and happened on Direct Fabrics through Google. Now I'm not handy at all but speaking with Jane Lovell who is

I was very impressed by the emails and phone calls with several people at Direct Fabrics whilst we tried to work out our order and they advised. The track arrived immediately and the curtains arrived much quicker than anticipated having been warned there might be a delay due to their supplies of fabrics being held up. The curtains were already pleated and hooked, thus ready to hang. The videos on their website give clear instruction about fixing the tracks. Great service.

I ordered some made-to-measure blackout acoustic curtains which were delivered quickly and to the exact size. The blackout function is excellent and the acoustic aspect certainly helps reduce traffic noise. The curtains are a bit stiff at the moment, but customer services advise me they will loosen up over time, although I can steam them to speed up the process. The curtains arrived before I received the email advising that they had been despatched but luckily I was home to receive the package. Because of this I have docked half a star and have had to round down the rating. Good curtains though, highly recommended.

I stumbled across Direct Fabrics while searching for sound reducing curtains, online. I’m glad I did, for they were considerably cheaper than their main competitor, who were overpriced and had a poor selection to choose from. Direct Fabrics, on the other hand, were very reasonably priced, for made to measure, and had a wide selection of colours and customisations to choose from. For example, you can choose from 5 different heading styles, if you pick ‘44mm eyelet’ you can select from 4 eyelet colours. You can also opt to have tiebacks included in your order, where applicable. Overall, I’m very satisfied with my 4db sound reducing curtains. They are of good quality, slightly heavier than I was expecting, and do indeed help to reduce external noise, for me that’s a road, street and church bell. My curtains also have blackout layer, as standard, so they also double as blackout curtains, not to mention the thermal regulation that helps keep heat in and out.

Choosing your Curtain Track Width

The width of the curtain track should extend past your window this allows for the curtains to stack back away from your window and allow light in.

Measure your recess and then add on 15cm on either side. For acoustics , we recommend further to fully cover the window and the surrounding area. In our test we added an additional 30cm to the width and also made the curtain floor length.

Wave curtains, for every 100cm of track the curtains will stack circa *18cm

Eyelet curtains, they will stack back circa 10cm per *70cm of track width

Pencil Pleat will stack approx 25% of the track width. eg. 210cm track will stack 52.5%

How to Measure for Blinds going Inside the Recess

How to measure for blinds inside thet recess

  • Measure the exact width of the recess in three places; at the top of the recess, in the centre of the recess and near the bottom - then take the  smallest size.
  • Measure the exact drop of the recess in three places on the left hand side of the recess, in the centre of the recess and on the right hand side of the recess - then take the smallest size.
  • We will take one cm off the finished width size you have given us, to allow for the blind to pull up and down easily.
  • Double check your measurements
  • Cord Safety - Mounting Height - We ask for the mounting height of your blinds to allow for the cord to be 150cm off the ground. If mounting at 210cm This is what you enter in the Fitting height box. We make a deduction to ensure the cord is 150cm from the floor. Thus the cord loop will be 60cm

How to Measure Outside of the Recess

  • Measure the recess in 3 places on the width and also 3 places on the drop. Take the widest measurement.
  • Measure the width of the actual recess plus an additional amount – Usually from 7cm-15cm whatever you think looks appropriate. This is for overlap.
  • Measure the exact drop of the recess. The blind would be fitted above the recess, so check the space above and add an amount on to the drop – usually from 7-15cm
  • These sizes you have taken will be the size of the finished blind.

  • Double check your measurements
  • Cord Safety - Mounting Height - We ask for the mounting height of your blinds to allow for the cord to be 150cm off the ground. Cubicle Tracks you have to measure with right angles from wall to wall where you want the track to go

Draw your room on a piece of paper with a sky view

Now measure from the wall to wall for straight tracks,

L Shape Tracks Measure to a point on the floor and mark with a piece of tape. Then for the other sides measure from the other wall to that point.

Always check for obstructions and fitting issues you may need to work around
